Sturgeon Spearing on Lake Winnebago

ABOUT THIS SERIES

Every year in February, when Lake Winnebago is covered in a thick layer of ice, daring fishermen are venturing out onto the lake for a chance at catching a sturgeon. Their tools include huge trucks, chainsaws, a six-pronged spear and whole lot of patience. Back in 2013 I got the opportunity to spent a day with a group of experienced fishermen who allowed me a look inside this highly unusual sport.

DATE OF THIS SERIES

17.02.2013

CAPTION

1) Scott riding on the back of his friends truck to get to the spot where the shack will be set up.

2) Cutting the fishing hole using one of the largest chainsaws available.

3) Three guys are required to push the cut out piece down and underneath the ice surface.

4) The shack is put into place over the hole.

5) The sides of the shack are sealed with ice in order to prevent light leaking in.

6) The decoy used to ensure that only old enough sturgeons are speared.

7) Patience is the most needed requirement when it comes to sturgeons.

8) Spear and decoy are in position.

9) Knives waiting for their turn.

10) A medium sized sturgeon at the weighing station.

11) The size and weight of the caught sturgeon is measured.
